TOMORROW'S TOLL

Tomorrow's Toll: by Paul Gray

'Twas late at night when first I thought
To reckon where you were.
My empty heart awakened
As it often did occur.

Sublime those memories of your love
Still echo in my head
To magnify your absence
As I lay awake in bed.

Yet havoc in my heart proclaims
One side is all there is;
And Byzantine suggestions
Circumvent my love for his.

My life contains no wonder
'Cept to find relief in death
When reaper with his scythe approach
To harvest my last breath.

The bane of life, this love that's lost
Yet lives within my soul,
Shall vex each day with sorrow
Til tomorrow takes her toll.
