The Tiger Inside My Heart (A Pantoum Poem)

Location

My bloodstained and angka-infested heart weeps for my family, my childhood, and my old life.

It beats faster and louder like my bamboo stick hitting my infamous Khim.

I dream of eating palm sugar candy with my little brother instead of mint leaves

And feeling the warm sun beat down my skin, dripping with salty sweat.

It beats faster and louder like my bamboo stick hitting my infamous Khim.

Like the ground shaking underneath my feet as the tanks quickly roll in.

I dream of feeling the warm sun beat down my skin, dripping with salty sweat

Humming along to the Cambodian love song; watching people shake the streets as they dance

Like the ground shaking under my feet as the tanks quickly roll in

Vibrating alongside gunshots shooting brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers.

The Cambodian love song continues to play but no one's dancing anymore.

Vibrating alongside the gunshots shooting brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers.

I dream of eating palm sugar candy with my little brother instead of mint leaves.

The Cambodian love song continues to play but no one's dancing anymore.

My bloodstained and angka-infested heart weeps for my family, my childhood, and my old life.
