The Things Can I See

Everyday I walk along, seeing all the things I can see
And I wonder why I can't see the stars
I see all the smoke and the smog
But I wonder why I can't see the stars

I see all the movement
All the people running, day to day without end
All of them running to the ground and shouting and coughing
And I wonder why I can't see the stars

There aren't any trees or grass, just concrete
And steam that rises off the ground
It makes me choke and all those people running cough
And I wonder why I can't see the stars

If someone sees you coughing they sell you syrup
It tastes bitter and makes you dizzy
It makes the people run in circles
And I still can't see the stars

I remember home where the air was clean and quiet
And people stopped to smile
Where I could glance up at the sky
And the stars would glare back at me.
