They say you are who you are when no one is looking

They say you are who you are when no one is looking

No one saw me on the rooftop of the theater downtown

Or see me slip that interviewer a note saying "hire her"

Placing pennies heads up in random places and leaving

They say you are who you are when no one is looking

No one saw me holding hands with the guy I liked

Or see me sneak him into the auditorium at the art museum

Pretending the ceiling was full of stars

They say you are who you are when no one is looking

No one saw me sleeping last night

Or see me waking with bloodshot eyes

Because I dreamt of saying what I wanted to

They say you are who you are when no one is looking

No one saw me practicing self defense

Or see me the night before alone in the parking lot surrounded my men

Secretly holding my pocket knife in my jacket

They say you are who you are when no one is looking

What if who I am is not who I want to show?
