They Never Heard Me
The mountains called to me
From far away, many years ago
When the world was just beginning to be eaten away
By our carelessness and greed;
Their cries echoed off stormy ridges
And snow topped peaks
I answered back,
My voice tiny in comparison,
Lost among the city noise;
Fast cars and screaming parties –
They never heard me.
I forgot about their cry
Even through all the “Save the Earth” protests,
Until that night when it was quiet
And the stars were shining the best they could in this polluted world.
I wondered how they were
And I wished I could scream to the heavens so they could hear me –
They never heard me.
I remember now
How their shout found me
And filled me with the courage to do anything I wanted
But the despairing words from the city filled my head and I failed
And now I am empty –
They never heard me.
