That's So Gay

“Hey, have you ever noticed that he's so gay?”
But they mean gay as in nasty, of course,
gay as in annoying, or selfish, or rude
not gay as in happy,
or someone who loves,
not gay as in the people who live with that title, the people who are gay.
It's not a problem, though! It's not what you think, it's all in good fun.
“I love the gays!”
(“But that's just so gay!”)

To a girl, as a guy, you're her special little lapdog
just a glitter covered pseudo-man
to wash and comb her hair
but as a girl, to a guy, you're such a special treat
a pair of sexy ladies
for all their streaming needs

So when a Jewish man rises, and he stands on shaking legs
He talks about war, when his people were nearly cleansed.
This is a man who knows what it's like to have freedom be scarce,
who knows what it's like to be overwhelmed,
who knows what it's like to be shamed.
This is a man, and he cannot believe we're fighting that same fight
over and over and over again
It's amazing how people treat you, when you're gay.

They say that everyone is something
gay, bi, straight, demi, pan,
queer fairy dyke butch faggot
nastyworthlessundeservingscum
it all melds together, it's all one big strand
but labels are labels,
black and white
all they tell you is which end of the bus to sit at.

Whisper, murmur, confess it like a sin
Your sad little secret: it's locked behind an iron door and it's hidden in your skin.
It chokes on the dark, and it catches in your throat
You whisper, murmur,
it will be ok, it'll be ok
“You'll be ok”
And then someone says
“Oh hey, that's so gay.”

And then your best friend is gay.
that's fine – that's great
You just want to hold him in your arms, to tell him he's going to be ok.
But can you really look into his eyes and tell him he'll be safe:
when you know if his parents found out
they'd try to beat him straight.

People try to save face, they say it's almost over.
That times are a changin' and the streets filled with protestors.
So it must be hard to believe that in this 'great day and age',
I've been called a
Lesbo.
Dyke.
Faggot.
...
Bitch.

Maybe I'm just that damn gay.

You
you watch all of this happen, but your eyes can only see beige,
and so there's nothing you can do, you just turn away
but as you walk off, you say
“Hey, have you ever noticed that she's so gay?”
