A term that nowadays has so many meanings
Unable to truly take pride in it
Because of the statistics
Statistics that say I cant go to college
That I cant wish for more out of my life
I am supposed to be a father by now
I should be on that corner right now
Selling white like its these emotions I bag
Into poetic drug sales for that feen
That feen who is actually a fellow brother
Another young spanish boy
Who sold into the beliefs
Who let the statistics define him
Design him
Blind him
And so these universities and adults ask me
Why do you want to go to college
What do YOU have to offer us
In honesty I have nothing to offer
I have no funds or family history thats relevant to you
But I have heart
I have soul
I have culture
Going to college isnt about ME
Its about US
If im accepted to a school, my family is accepted to this school
All their values, all their love
Comes with me to this institution
If im accepted, its a statement
To all the other young latinos
From Cali to the deep boroughs of my home
That you dont have to be a statistic
Break the cycle they have given
Show the world, that you... are different
A spanish american, latino american, dominican american
All titles
But the key word in all of them IS
AMERICAN
Meaning I have all the rights these wealthy white kids have
I have every right to this opportunity
My grandfather spent his whole life working to come to this country
To chase the american dream
To better the future of his kin
And its about to come into fruition
I am a spanish american
I am the first in my family to go to college
And I will be the first one to break the statistics
I will be the outlier
I will be me
A spanish American, with a Latino dream.
