Sooner or Later

Let me sleep forever
In the cracks between your thoughts
Always unconsciously thinking of me
The deeper the sleep
The harder it is to remember what I look like
What I smell like
How my hands felt gripped around your neck
Finding old photos of me
Was worse than listening to the recordings I sent

An army of rancid raccoons
Reminded you of the makeup
I used to cake onto my face
Now it's a clean slate
Hollowed out eyes and high cheek bones
The pale of my skin clenching to the layers of muscle underneath

Sooner or later
You start to forget me entirely
The only thing bringing me back
Is the songs
And novels
And movies
That we used to indulge ourselves in
And lock the doors from the inside
So no one could join us
They wouldn't understand you say
No one would understand

You've forgotten what my voice sounds like
Never again will you hear the soft low hum
Of the voice I used when I was seconds from sleep
You will never feel my lips pressed against yours
Starving for something I can't give
Because who kisses a corpse
