I have seen the songbird

With eyes more brilliant than feathers

And feathers carved from the sea

Flying way above me

But why won’t my bird sing?

Coaxed in brass bars

And admired through starry eyes

No lullaby will ever rise

I am simply she who forged a cage

For the songbird knows no master

And it will never love his keeper

His silence cuts at my heart deeper and deeper

I have loved the songbird so

My eyes have bore into its visage

And memorized the lacing of his soul

Vying for his wings to finally make me whole

Yet the songbird will never love me

It will never sing in the prison I have made

But I cannot give up my brazen beauty

The songbird dies despising me
