Something in the Air

I saw you today
The January air was chill
When the sun was hiding
And the clouds were low and gray
The grass was brown
And the hard clay orange as always
You were with a girl
And you were both smiling
I’ve seen you with plenty of girls before
But something was different
It wasn’t the girl
It wasn’t the way your arm was over her shoulders
It wasn’t how her palm held yours contently
It wasn’t how her small figure fit perfectly along yours
But I could feel something in me changing
Hurting
I could feel the love being sucked right out of me
My heart dwindling
And something in the back of my mind wilting
Dreams of us dying
Maybe it was too quiet
Maybe it was the lack of greenery
Maybe it was something in the air
But something was different
Something made me ache
Something made me lose hope in us
As if there could have ever been an us
I just know I saw you today
And you were breathtaking as always
