The Softening

Once upon a time,

There was a girl

She wore suits and makeup

And blood on her lips

She would tie her hair back

With severity, a pencil

Stabbed through the bun

And she wore hard boots

That you could hear

From all the way down the hall

And then this girl

Melted

Her heart fell out

Her shadows were lit

And her heart was

Illuminated

From the inside

Her hard lines smudged

Trading crisp button-downs

For loose, airy blouses

And black for light blue

The blood turned to rose petals

Her makeup softened

Her hair fell down

And with less severity,

Curled around her shoulders

And her boots stopped

Echoing down the halls

They danced

And this boy

That melted her heart

And softened her lines

And broke her walls

And relaxed her posture

And rattled her nerves of steel

He stayed

Because she melted him too
