The Silent Library

Location

I took a nap

While he made us hot chocolate

So we could be warm

And not have to freeze to death.

Cloudy skies invading

Beautifully into the hall,

He roasted marshmallows,

Chocolate, humming quietly

As I snored-

I, who planned

To study with him,

Orchestrating a web of pleas that held

This moment at its center.

What could I say?

That I am a man

Full of desire?

He woke me up,

Serving me hot chocolate

As if he were dreaming,

As if I were his dream,

As if he too had come

To the final hall of longing.

I woke up, awake as the breaking dawn

Reflecting the content

Of my finals.

Then he said my name-

He reassured me that I was going to be fine-

And I, who did not love him,

Opened my heart.
