When I was a little girl

I dreamt of fairy godmothers

Magical spells of Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo

A tower only my prince charming could save me from

How I could see my reflection show that happy ending

Without

Scrubbing floors

Or singing in sync with birds

As  little girls, we are taught to start writing  love stories before we could write our names

 

My Once upon a time was just a silly beginning to an infamous fairytale

So

I dreamed of a princess that looked like me

With coco skin

afro hair ,

dimples

And homemade recipes

So Disney gave me Tiana from “Princess and the Frog”

A girl Who could cook up an attitude only big enough for a black girl to swallow whole

Princess Tiana taught me

how to be woman without wanting a man

Taught me that wishing on stars is a waste of time

Taught me a man is only good if he can prove it

But when she fell for her prince

 

I could not relate to wanting a boy

Because I wanted a Tiana

 

I wanted to have a princess and be one

 

wanted her to be the star I wished on

My fairy godmother to take me to her ball

I wanted to be wherever she was

Whoever she was

 

I wanted a fairytale ending

 

And when I met her

She looked like a goddess on stage

 

Her hair  as kinked up as I dreamed

 

With a heart of gold

 

Skin of honey

I can not wait to taste

 

A Smile so bright enough to make every star in the galaxy say got-damn Who the hell is she

 

She is melanin queen

Is beauty

Has an attitude big enough for the both of us

Her hand craft magic

And when she cast her spells

She leaves audience speechless

She is the  wish my heart made

She is my once upon a time

With a silly little fairy tale ending
