are slippery.
Like moss on a riverbed rock
they hide, multiplying in the dark places
where no one can see.

Slowly, so slowly they creep,
covering each and every and pebble,
seeking to reign sovereign
over their small ecosystem,

and, before anyone can realize,
the river has turned
a jealous shade
of green.
