The day goes by, information speeds faster than imaginable
Yet something is going back in time.
Education should be good, no great.
The USA is a world power after all
Yet students are sub-par.
They score below those from other countries.
We are supposedly number one
Not really
We are more like 23 and 18.
No longer one, what happens if we continue to sink?
The end will move us down the list
Not being a superpower like we’ve been for a century
An unthinkable change of pace
But what can we do?
Students are scored on filing bubbles
Which one is right A B C
Teachers teach so students don’t freeze
When they see a sheet with small circles and have to choose one
Not being taught to think for themselves
students are taught to regurgitate answers
I am sick of spewing out information that was shoved in my head
For the soul purpose of making a grade
I want information that will help me live
Help me connect to the world
Information I will actually use
I know lots of others think like me.
For you see it is my dream to become
A teacher to inspire kids
To be their own person, not just a number or stat
Yes they’ll take several tests since there’s nothing I can do
Since I want to see how much they grow
I want to see them grow, not just spew out facts.
I want them to think and find that even though
Information flies faster than superman
To be really informed they must think
Not like a robot filling a bubble
But a caring person who wants to change the world
Who wants to make something spectacular that others
Never thought was possible.
The world of possibility is at the finger tips
Of not just the students in the classroom
But all who are learning
To cope with life and information sprinting from here to there.
