The ride to freedom was long
Time would never heal
The wounds and the cries
From men and children alike
Full of tears, pain, shame
They kept on singing their song
Persevering through the ordeal
Looking ahead to bluer skies
And a time to be free from the strike
Full of tears, pain, shame
Once the brutality was proved wrong
The possibility of freedom became real
And they stopped believing the lies
That had been based solely on what they looked like
Time for joy, peace, strength
