Rainbow Summer

Rainbow summer
Summer is made of colours,
Only of colours

Blue is the sound and the feel
Of water gently lapping
On a pale hand trailing
Long fingers dangling over
A sun-bathed pier

Green is the smell of freshly
Cut grass on a warm afternoon

Yellow is the taste of
Dew and fragrant honeysuckle
Carried on the breeze, or else
The feel on sunlight on bare
Shoulders

White is the sound of children
Playing in the light of a sun
They think will last forever
Laughing in innocence

Pink is the silky smooth
Texture of a new-born rose
Or the taste, dusty-sweet
Of a first kiss

Red is made of dappled flashes
Bursts of light on closed eyelids
When head id tilted back, as if
To embrace the falling light

Brown is the feel of warm stones
Of stones underfoot or the smell
Of newly ploughed soil

Violet is made of front porch
Rocking chairs creaking in the twilight

Black is the colour of whispers
Passed back and forth at midnight
Or else it’s the feel of velvety
Breath fogging in the starry air
While grey is the feel of mist
Cool and damp on bare skin
Or the promise of the dawn

Life is made of colours
Only of colours
Hold nothing back.
Taste, smell, hear
And see the colours
But most of all,
Feel them.
