The Price of a Beloved Nation
May twenty-four, nineteen-ninety-one
a day of importance, a day of remembrance, a day of reverence
marking the end of a thirty-year bloody, decimating struggle for independence.
Eritreans fought for tranquility, liberty, prosperity.
And through this, through all this, we earned a flag...
An alluring, newly fabricated emblem of our country,
with its deep deep sea blue,
golden and glistening yellow,
vibrant, luscious green,
and a contrasting depressing bloodshot red represented the beloved lives lost was
lifted higher and higher,
closer to the sanguine heavens.
It dances in the wind celebrating the birth of a new nation,
a new independent country.
A country that was given life through our martyrs...
We need to remember them
Remember the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, cousins, neighbors
that all paid the ultimate price.
And it was resilience, persistence, perseverance
that we could gain the freedom that we strived for, hungered for, fought for, and even died for
And through this, through all of this…
We ensured a future worth fighting for.
A country, a nation worth sacrificing for.
The beloved, beautiful country of Eritrea.
