Pretenses

Location

Pretenses are a poison
Society refuses to forsake
They are walls built with bricks of little lies
Expose just one and the wall will break

And yet, they seem so vital
When trying to hide your faults and fears
So you continue adding to the wall
More and more each year

Until someone uncovers that crucial brick
One short peek is all it takes
The bricks have started falling
And your wall completely breaks

Do you run from such disaster?
Or bravely face the day
When all have blindly scorned you
And there’s nothing else to say

The unfairness of it sickens you
For while they hate, and scorn, and jeer
Their own grow ever higher
A ten-foot wall to hide their fears
