Powerful Women

Amber skin like maple sap

Opal eyes like a sticky trap

Catch your heart with fairy wings

Snares your soul every time she sings

Powerful women sing their powerful songs

To lift your nose when days are long

To draw you close so you can hear

To feel your warmth and know you’re near

I grew on these songs like a sultry foundation

The building blocks for our crumbling nation

They bled their life into every verse

More powerful than a witches curse

They sang for love and what they knew

And all the time their legacies grew

Eartha, Dinah, and Nina Simone

Ella Fitzgerald to bring us home.

Aretha Franklin, gone but remembered

Billie holiday, an icon forever

Etta Jones and Etta James

Sarah Vaughan, remember their names

Powerful women that’s what they are

Blessed with voices like heavenly stars

Powerful women they will always be

So take some time to listen with me

My country
