Possum Awesome Possum

It’s not a chicken that crossed the road,

just a funny looking possum.

He’s round and plump with a ratty tail,

but he thinks that he looks awesome!

The fat marsupial goes for a walk

and smells a flower blossom.

He’s very hungry and thinks for dinner

a cricket would taste awesome.

He climbs a tree onto a limb

and next hangs upside down.

Then the possum shuts his eyes

and that’s how he is found.

A little boy breaks off the limb

and carries off the possum.

He wakes to see the moving ground

and thinks that’s really awesome!

Now the possum reaches up

and grabs onto the limb.

He begins to climb up towards the boy

with a great sharp, toothy grin.

When he sees the pointy teeth

the little boy’s afraid,

and thinks a bite upon his hand

will very soon be made.

The possum keeps on climbing up

and heading for his hand.

The little boy flings him away

and he rolls into the sand.

“Why do you think you don’t like me

and throw me on the ground?”

The possum questions of the boy,

who doesn’t smile, but frowns.

“You have a long and ratty tail

and are a fat and ugly possum.

Your teeth look sharp and scary

and you certainly aren’t awesome.”

The possum crept away in sadness

feeling hurt inside.

He wanted to feel special

but instead he hid and cried.

Suddenly he heard a noise

that came from a near bush.

The possum slowly wiped his tears

then gave the limbs a push.

Inside he saw a big surprise.

It was another possum!

She looked up at him and grinned.

She thought that he looked awesome!

Could it be love at first sight?

Did she think he’s special?

He knew he thought she smiled so bright

she looked just like an angel.

She knew she loved his ratty tail.

He knew he loved her toothy grin.

They walked off happily paw-in-paw.

So true love begins.

Everything must have a purpose,

not just the ugly possum.

We’re put here for a reason.

Inside we all are awesome!
