Police Poem

Mon, 01/16/2012 - 11:33 -- poet

“Excuse me, excuse me sir.” “Yes, I do have ID here. No I haven’t been drinking.” “No sir, I’m not getting smart.” SLAM
right up against the wall
watching the blood drip from the lips that only spoke truth see,
I never thought the day would come when I’d become the victim
victim of what I though people exaggerated because I guess talking about how they were violated in a way they weren’t supposed to be I thought they lied most of the time just to make it seem like it was worse than it really was but,
nothing prepared me for the shouting of obscenities that me, not thinking for a moment that I was smart enough to understand that whatever he was doing was against the law but see he was meant to know the law he was a cop but telling him was the wrong move.
SLAM! Right on the ground. Fell as fast as I could I tried to catch myself from falling but I wasn’t fast enough and my face hit the floor.
Scrapes on my face as my asthma began to work up I refused to shed a tear.
Screaming at him to let me go and after 30 minutes of this shit he did.
Beaten and fucked, up mentally in a way he didn’t think I could find my way but, I did.
I jumped in a cab and made my home to the man whose fellow officers did this to me.
DADDY! DADDY!
he ran downstairs scared for me. I cried when I told him what his people did to me.
You the cop right, you supposed to protect me right? Yet you beat me.
I can’t even open my eyes. I ran to his room and I grabbed his uniform and through it to the floor. Showing him exactly what they did to me. “Your people did this to me.”
My daddy, stuck between his work that he loved and his baby girl, which one was he to choose?
He asked me if I knew who did this to me. He asked me for any information on the person that did this to me and little did they know that I took mental notes of the bastard that did this.
We went and him risking his job to make his point clear he beat the shit out of the cop that did this to me. He beat him just as bad as he did me. “I am here to protect you baby. And would do anything in my power to protect you again, even if it means risking my life in the process. I hope you understand that forever. Until this day, I knew it was true.

Our parents and the relationships we have with them are often topics for poems, and the story you told in this poem was very special, because you expressed both positives and negatives about our parents and the specific jobs they have. Parents have the jobs that they get paid for, and they have the job that they can never give up but don't get paid for, which is indeed being parents, and it was interesting how you connected those two types of jobs in this poem.

This poem and recital is so powerful. It reminds me to be proud of my father and that he does what he does because he loves me. It also reminds that no matter what, I will always come first.
