Poetry My Escape
Location
Poetry was my escape
It helped me get to second base
For the dreams that I have chased
Now my dreams and reality are face to face
I was that young kid with dark clouds over me
letting other people’s minds take control of me Saying if i didn’t wear this, or didn’t say that it wasn’t working see Now i realize if i did wear this, or did say that in the future it would have been hurting me I thank God every day for the woman that has nurtured me Nagging in my ear cutting through my brain like mental surgery Making sure everything she said got through certainly She was testing me making sure this young buck was ready for lesson three Now personally myself I was wondering what could that be To finally see a black man lead himself away from the streets Or to see if she raised a gentleman who wasn’t in and out the sheets Who had no problem treating every woman like queen as he bowed to their feet Loyalty, respect, responsibility these are the things poetry has done for me It kept me around good friends and helped me avoid strange company It kept my spirit cleansed so nothing negative was destroying me It kept me away from drugs so nothing physically can poison me Now I can say this with dignity poetry was me protector I can say this without fidgeting poetry was my shelter I can say this with assurance everything that you see nothing else could measure
Why?
God created poetry and just like God it wants to make you better
