Perilously Poised

paint spread on the canvas of the sky
the delicate strokes of a master
minuscule changes
in time are magnified
the mind retains what can never be truly recreated
a jar of swirling color

time stands still while
life and death twist and twirl
like desperate dancers
spinning too fast to be separated

wisps of ideas and memories float
far above the chaos
illuminated for a instant
by the flicker of the first star
between the clouds

creation a globe balanced on a knife’s edge
perilously poised

in the blink of an eye
a whisper of wind
the spine tingles with
an unexpected shiver

shadows spread through the gathering mist
fear creeps
black trees claw at the sky
like a cat
the wind howls

despair claims the throne
until hope rises
with the morning sun

this is the moment
the eternity
between day and night
