Overwhelming Expectations - A Modern-Day Sonnet

Everyone expects you to be someone

To somehow make a difference,

But you just feel so overrun

Like a stampede in the wilderness.

You're expected to accomplish greatness:

Go to school, marry, get a job,

Maybe write a book or start a business,

Acquire money and get thing-a-ma-bobs.

But you feel trapped in a cave of confusion

With no escape from the decisions of living,

And the future seems like an illusion

Of numerous possibilities, so unforgiving

As it leaves you in a state of indecision

Of the kind of imprint to leave and your vision.

Keep writing friend. I used to write poetry just like this. Remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It seems like there isn't, but once get over these humps the world opens up. Just because society wants nothing of you, it doesn't mean that there is nothing to do. But it's a good poem. Very Charles Bukowski
