Emotions swell together,
Up and down,
Up and down.
My heart and your heart,
Our hearts,
Seem to beat together as one,
A never-ending drum.

I hurt,
You cry;
You giggle,
I smile;
Our hearts
Are one in the same.
But is that honestly a good thing?

For when you smile at me,
My heart stutters,
But it shatters, too.
If I let you see it,
You will feel it, too.
Our hearts,
Seem to be too close.

Our emotions swell so high,
But they are misplaced
And wrong; oh so wrong.
Though we might be close,
Our hearts
Are claimed by other things,
Aren't they, my dear?

Yours by her smile and laugh,
And mine by my dreams and aspirations.
Yet, we still feel so tied
To each other so strongly.
Our hearts
Recognize each other
From miles away.

When you give me a now rare smile,
I can't help but feel warm inside.
When I despair at my shortcomings,
You can't help but share my pain.
Our hearts
Will never be able to become one,
I am sad to say.

But maybe some day,
Somewhere down the road,
When we have loved and lost
At other things,
Our hearts
May meet again and
Find joy together once more.
