Once Shining Sea to Sea

Do you see the stars,

Glistening above the promise land like a compass leading to

Prosperity,

Opportunity, and Hope?

Do you wander into the fields that effervesce with fertility,

Demanding to be sowed?

Do you ponder about the lore beneath water’s crest?

Glimmering water, how beautifully the sun’s splendor reflects while hiding the creatures beneath.

We had exiled the keepers of the land.

Granting access to a magnificent work created by the unknown.

However,

PRIVILEGE

lay heavy like chains.

Engrossment in oneself bruised the landscape.

Electric beams outwit the stars, blurring them into darkness.

Seas no longer shine coated in oil;  the water’s fauna stifle for breath.

The waves of grain are no longer vibrant,

Crops instead blackened from soil decimated by synthetic nutrients and pesticides

Mountain tops obscured by polluted haze

Earth liquefied by torrents and paucity of vegetation

Open fields once home to birds whistling at daybreak,

Transposed into a monstrous hill comprised of man-made filth.

Out of sight out of mind, right?

How can we be world leaders when the land that our country has been founded on is being DESTROYED

by our own?
