Ode to Mamojaan (My Uncle)

I remember you staying up late into the night,
Helping me with my math homework,
Crumpled papers, erasers, a lamp on the side illuminating light.
I remember the many times you surprised me with new toys, or books. I still have the striped tiger you bought me from your business trip.
I remember one night I was so sick,Throwing up, eyes blood shut, tears in my eyes, And you sat by me and asked why I’m crying, you told me to stop crying, And I pointed to a book and asked you to read to me.
Not because I couldn’t read, but because I needed someone’s soothing words to comfort me, and to ease the burning pain in my stomach.
I remember all the things you have done for me, And I am blessed to have an uncle like you,
Cause blessings like this don't come free.
