October 29, 2012 – Hurricane Sandy
A storm of water and wind, smelled from miles away
A day before the worse of times, when people began to find their way
A district minutes away from home, from the home of the hurricane,
Was named as Zone A which was right near the Caesar’s Bay
O' the tide that was yet to reach! Why was it written to ruin lives?
Lives of innocent beings, who knew not where to hide.
Seeking shelter, away from home to protect them from you
You, who drew closer and closer warning them with a cue
Soon when the streets were all empty,
And they left the first floors sacrificed.
The winds came rushing like snow to the cold ground.
Those from the second floors and those who evacuated,
Peaked out from the glass windows that trembled from the sound.
Sounds of the water that suddenly appeared gushing into the streets,
Like a prey running for his life.
Their eyes forgot to blink and tears lay right on the bed of them
Horror and shock beat in their hearts, and blood felt frozen
A city that never sleeps, sung the lullaby of death to many.
Lights shut as the eyes of hundreds closed for the last time.
The sun peaked from behind distant buildings.
Buildings who stay mounted like warriors undefeated.
But they weren’t stronger than those hearts,
that witnessed destruction and stood unvanquished.
Then the journey began back home,
The home that lay a quarter beneath dirty waters
No! It only strengthened them, who now knew they could overcome any storm
This belief led even the smallest of lives to begin the construction of a new home.
What ruins you, should be answered back!
And again, the buildings went up, the lights lit open
and it all was made better than before, like the rainbow after a storm
Then they all prayed to their lords in the heavens.
O lord! Let not our efforts go to waste, and soon the hearts were patched.
For I am the one who witnessed this.
