Numbers

When had humans turned
into numerical measurements?
How can one man's successes exceed another's?
Is our potential for good just biological serendipity
of genetic composition passed down from our mothers?

Now numbers are all that prevails
in the quest for equality:
Test scores, GPAs, age, and cell phone digits.
Not to mention debt, tax, social security tags,
and -- as seen on TV -- budget deficits.

And I find that in life there are
equations with limits --
people whose talents are three-fifths of a whole.
Still, others have an equal frequency of skill,
though on the negative side of the integer pole.

But it takes one million individuals
to make one million;
One hundred without one is just ninety-nine.
Is equilibrium possible just by doing the math,
or is the standardization of ability perfectly fine?
