nothing has changed

AT AGE 5 I UNDERSTOOD LOVE BETTER THAN I EVER HAVE. YOUNG, NAIVE, PURE. HADN'T BEEN GRINDED DOWN INTO THE PAVEMENT YET. DIDN'T HAVE A SCAR RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE OF MY BARELY BEATING HEART. TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEXITIES BUT YOUNG ENOUGH TO STILL UNDERSTAND THE SIMPLICITIES. LOVE WAS SIMPLE. LOVE WAS WANTING TO MAKE THE GIRL WHO SAT NEXT TO YOU AT LUNCH HAPPY FOREVER. NOW, THERE'S A WAR ABOUT LOVE AND WHO DESERVES IT. EVERYONE DESERVES LOVE! WHO CARES WHERE IT COMES FROM? AFTER ALL, LOVE IS THE SAME AS WHEN WE WERE 5. EXCEPT NOW, THERE'S A MACHINE GRINDING US DOWN INTO THE PAVEMENT IF WE LOVE THE WRONG PERSON.

This poem is about:
Me
