No More Pressure
If I had only one choice
One decision to make
That could change everyone’s way of life.
A choice that would not only defy fate,
But would defy the very laws society created.
I would choose wisely,
Carefully, and with all factors in mind.
I would not let my pride get in the way;
Nor my own selfish wants;
Nor my negligence.
I would put petty issues behind me.
Facing the challenge with grace,
Moral justice, and confidence.
So, what is that I would change about this world?
I would change society’s everlasting ignorance;
Society has this clouded view.
The idea of what is perfect and what is not.
What to be and what not to be.
There is no acceptance,
Instead there is judgment and shame.
There is an enormous pressure on us
To be “perfect”,
To be skinny and beautiful,
To be kind and happy,
To be in love or be rejected.
If you are not these things
You are not a successful member of society.
You are an outcast,
You are disgusting and turned away.
You are no more than the trash on the sidewalk.
They make you feel less human
With every new concept of what you should be.
Society’s pressure destroys self-esteem,
Increase the suicide rate,
Encourages eating disorders,
Creates distorted self images,
And affects everyone.
Not just young girls.
It victimizes men, women- everyone.
If you don’t look like model on the cover of Vogue,
You’re not pretty,
You’re worthless and less than.
Society tells you to be yourself,
But not if yourself isn’t approved by its view.
Society says to go natural,
Unless you have acne or imperfections.
Its hypocrisy is intolerable.
Its judgment is insufferable.
Its standards are unreachable.
This view is absolutely ridiculous.
This view is what I would change.
I would create a whole new outlook as its replacement.
I would make it so there is no perfect,
There is no set idea of what is beautiful,
There is no call to be anyone but yourself.
Come as you and be accepted.
As human beings,
We have this need to belong.
Society should open its arms to all
Accepting them as a member,
Urging them to be who they are,
Telling them they are beautiful as they are.
There is no reason to feel insecure.
We were all made unique,
With different abilities and characteristics.
There isn’t anything wrong with
Simply being who you were destined to be.
If society altered its view to fit mine,
The rest would fall into place.
Happier people,
More living people,
Fulfilled hearts.
Bright futures for all.
No outcasts,
No losers.
A world of understanding.
