My Mother

She asked me
Tell me something about your mother
So I told her
In 2012,
My mother was told by doctors
the pain in her chest
could be breast cancer
Although it ended up being a false alarm
When I asked her if she was worried,
she looked me in my eyes, smiled,
and said "No...
Things could always be worse"
My mother is the type of person
whose smile could be found
in a dark room full of complaints
My mother is the type of person
who chooses to be a rose
on days everyone around her
chooses to be weeds
My mother is the type of person
who stands by you
when everyone else turns their back
When she asked me
Tell me something about your mother
I swallowed all the air I could
that would give me the ability
to tell her things
I never had the courage
to tell my mother out loud
And when my mother asks me to describe
the woman I'm about to marry
I'll look my mom in her eyes, smile,
and say "You know Mom...
She's alot like you"
