In my classroom

My teacher asks us to come up with controversial topics to discuss, immediately an idea pops into my head.

I raise my hand, ready to speak my mind. He calls on me and I begin. "Gay Marriage." I say.

He gives me a small smirk, "Let's not get into that."

"Why not?" Another student cuts in.

Obviously we all know why, our teacher has made it quite clear of his personal faith and religion and how things like gay marriage are not accepted in the bible. This angers me. This is public school. Having your own faith and own religious values is great, but you can't shut down topics in a public school just because they go against your faith. This is not the first time it has happened.

The week prior we were instructed to improvise skits and the two class clowns decided they were going to randomly introduce a transsexual character into their skit. Almost instantaneously our teacher shut it down. Claiming that we should not be referencing things like that in class and that it goes against nature.

Personally, I feel that instead of shutting us down, he should let us have an in depth discussion and talk about it. Maybe his calling is in a private Christian school rather than a public one.
