Much More Than a Color

Black- much more than a color.
It represents an entire race.
A feeling of pride and honor,
humility and grace.

Unfortunately over the years
it's connotation has been diluted to
nothing more than mere prejudice
and sheer discrimination.

The chains that once binded
us to slave ships and boards
are now broken free.
But unfortunately,
we are binded to the stigma
and racial slurs of today's society.

We are writers, dancers, singers, scientists, designers, artists, doctors.
We are anything we want to be.

Our ancestors endured hardships
so that we can be free today.
I thank them for all that they've done
and wouldn't have it any other way.

From Martin's dream
to Rosa's boycott,
Maya's inspiring writing
and Harriett's courage;
because of them, we
now have equal opportunity.
