The Moment when I Cried

Location

My parents call me into the living room,

My siblings stand with me,

My father has been on the phone

For half an hour.

I had a surgery last week,

We were hoping I had no cancer,

We were hoping

That this was all over.

My dad tells me the news,

My mom holds onto my hand,

My siblings stand next to me,

Because it isn’t.

Another surgery,

Possible radiation,

Medication forever,

Pain again.

Good news,

No more cancer,

Health back to normal,

Pain gone, but even so

My scars remain.
