The Mirror Does

Location

It glares back at you.

Shows your flaws,

The impurities on your skin,

The faults across your face, and even

The pollutions of your mind.

When you think no one sees,

The mirror does.

It can’t lie,

It refuses.

Even when you try to cover it up,

With anything available,

Make up, smiles, scowls.

It knows all secrets, truths, realities.

When you think no one sees,

The mirror does.

Try to deceive it.

To make it show the things you want to see,

The things you want to be.

Try to hide from it the things you hide from yourself.

The things you hide from the eyes of the world around you.

When you think no one sees,

The mirror does.

You may stare aimlessly for hours

Enveloping your secrets into the mirror,

Away from others' criticisms.

Because you know it can’t judge.

Because it’s only job is to reflect.

You know that it won’t let you down.

You hide the cracks you know you shouldn’t but do

Just for the sake of hiding.

When you think no one sees,

The mirror does.

You can paint a picture

On your blank, canvas face.

You can tell a story,

A sweet tale,

Or a lie.

But the mirror paints no pictures,

Tells no stories, tales, or lies.

It only shows you the truth you already know.

When you think no one sees,

The mirror does.

The deep, dark, truthful mirror isn’t cruel or kind.

It isn’t blinded by love, or blinded by hate.

It cannot look away, or choose not to see.

It cannot lie, or construct gossip.

It only knows what you know about yourself.

And when you think no one sees,

The mirror does.
