Midnight River

11:30 pm in the city

And those glittering lights don’t seem so pretty

In Jamaica, Queens tonight

The bus couldn’t go any slower

And midnight was coming even closer

She needs to get home on time

The bus driver stops at a sign and she closes her eyes

There is a bridge on the other side of the city.

I could jump off and let the cold water hit me

Swim through the Hudson

And let the cold river water wash my sorrows

Take away the thoughts of tomorrow

Just for tonight before the clock strikes midnight

11:45 in the motel

The exit sign flickers, like a warning bell

The walls are painted with foreshadowing

But she can’t tell what’s going down tonight

Opens the door there he is

Looks straight through her like she isn’t even his

Like once long ago

And she knows

12:00 a.m. in the streets

Her shoes hit the pavement as she is running free

Wind in her hair and her thoughts tangled with the moon

She is headed towards that midnight river

And she going to be there soon
