Memories of Steel

I wish memories were steel,

And nothing could break them.

I would never forget,

No, not ever again.

If memories were steel,

Then I just might remember

The sing-songy voice,

Of my fun-loving mother.

If memories were steel,

I'd still see the face,

Of my very first love,

It would never erase.

If memories were steel,

Grandma would recall,

What it was, to be eighteen,

When she dreamt she'd have it all.

If memories were steel,

Every day, every laugh,

Every beautiful sunset.

All the faces and names,

I would never forget.

But memories are tissues,

In reality,

They flee.

If they were made of steel,

My mind

Wouldn't dare,

To take them from me.
