Man & Woman

Man, Woman & Child
Like father, mother, and seed
Family portraits in the living room
With smiles that cover what man and woman use to be
How they use to see, Life
Single during their 20s
Condoms in their wallets
Young Hearts Run Free, without responsibility
No devotion to others
Just thoughts of one day walking down the aisle
Eventually... Our day will come
And we'll smile with hope for the future
To share life with another, til death do us part
Newlyweds without a clue, of the pressure
To find the beauty in each other
Years after the kids, after retirement
Long after the shades of youth have worn off
The question will emerge, Are we still in love?
If not, where did the love go?
Man & Woman, like Adam & Eve
Both yearning for companionship
Yet fearful of commitment
I guess that's why some people give up on love and say forget it
Marriage is lovely, but it's complicated
So with shields, we block our hearts
And cover our eyes with spreaded fingers
'Cause we see, but we don't see
Our feelings being in the hands of another

This poem brings up the fear of commitment that many people have. I liked how you used the image of a family portrait to represent how we all go through different stages in our lives and how we grow, instead of being like a painting, always the same.
