Love Like Equals

They scorn us, love,
we're outlaws on the run,
looking for a place to call home,
where we are accepted.
Can it be, we will always be rejected?
Just because we are different from the others?
Even though we love each other?
They say homosexuality is an abomination.
Enough to earn us eternal damnation.
How can this hellish idea be true?
Will I be punished for loving you?
This torure on Earth is close enough to hell.
They banish us, make our marriage illegal
because they can't love like we do, as equals.
When the smoke clears after this battle is done,
will we still be on the run,
or will we reclaim from the wreckage, our freedom,
to love each other, and love like equals?

I wrote this poem to give attention to the fact that gay marriage is illegal in most of the states in America. I believe this is unfair and should be changed.
