Love for a Child

Children are an excuse
When you are old
Mature,
When your life is settling down,
And you feel yourself slipping into a rut,
You turn to kids to be your inspiration
To make each day and adventure.
Mothers and Fathers, you owe your Kids.
You brought them into a cruel world
That supplies tears for every smile.
You did what you thought was best for them.
And they gave you a thousand laughs,
A million grins.
People of all ages,
Minding their own business,
Swaying on the train,
With empty eyes,
And roaming thoughts,
No smiles to be found.
Until they see the sweat-heart clinging to someone’s hand.
Peering out the window.
Asleep in someone’s lap.
Asking question after question.
Unraveling the world with new eyes.
Kids help their parents
See the little things,
That you’ve overlooked so long in your rush.
A kid’s delight is more contagious than the flew.
It radiates outward, hitting faster and stronger than any cold
Filling everyone’s day with just a little more hope,
An extra smile,
A deep breath,
One more ounce of patience
To carry adults through the day.
The warmth of your baby
Curling up by your side
Secure and relaxed because they have you,
So they know they’ll be alright.
Makes you love them
All the more
The glow that settles in your heart
Forgives them for your tiring day
And you’re comforted.
And to them you owe your life, your love, your passion, your pride, your smiles, your excuse, to remain a child, inside.
