Lost in Literature

Thu, 10/25/2018 - 21:40 -- Kayla A

Years ago, I picked up my first book and immediately I was immersed into a new world

Never to be seen again, as I drown in a sea of my own imagination

Teleporting into stories beyond my wildest dreams

I’ve made lifelong friends with whom I’ve shared countless adventures

I fought injustice, solved mysteries, travelled through time and saved the world

For the first time, I experienced emotions like laughter, sadness, fear, and anger

A few paragraphs can hold so much significance that it feels like they are sliding off the page and attaching themselves to our hearts

Since my reality wasn't adequate, I learned lessons elsewhere

Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird taught me to always stand up for what I believe in

Hermione Granger taught me to tackle my fears

Starr Carter from The Hate You Give taught me to never be afraid to use my voice or dwell on the opinions of others

Ta Nehisi Coates taught me that I’m more than the labels i carry with me

These fictional characters leave a real impact

They empower me

Build up my confidence

Advance my character

Tend to my soul

Bring light to my darkness

And challenge the norm

I grew up holding my dreams in my hand

I was born in the pages and raised in the plot

Equipped with the greatest weapon of all

Knowledge

Although, turning the last page can feel like losing a great friend

Books have given me the greatest gift I could ask for

The ability to live through my most precious memories again and again
