The Lonely Tree

The Lonely Tree

There once lived a lonely tree,

The goodness within him he couldn't see,

No one he felt good enough for,

Disappointed with himself to the very core.

One day the tree woke up to a sound,

Very faint and that of fluttering wings,

Perhaps some company he thought was found,

The joy and elation the very thought brings.

A butterfly, the prettiest one he's ever seen,

To grant shade to those tiny wings he was quite keen.

How the hours passed on like minutes that day,

Surely to break their bond there must be no way.

But his enlightenment didn't last for long,

For there was another butterfly that came along,

Together they made the perfect pair,

And they abandoned the tree, how unfair!

He watched in despair as they danced and played,

He couldn't believe his eyes, he felt betrayed.

He believed his friendship with her had been true,

But now he wished he were a butterfly too.

The pair fluttered into the sunset, And she never waved back,

The tree could feel his leaves wilt, And his heart shatter with a crack.

And now the tree went back to hating himself,

the sorrow and pain where you have nobody to confide in but yourself.

But what if I told you the lonely tree was never truly alone throughout the tale,

For he had someone who loved him, And admired him deeply without fail.

It is indeed a shame that he wasn't aware,

Or maybe he was too sad to notice or to care,

About the girl who sat beneath him day and night,

Shedding tears at his story what a heartbreaking sight.

As she wrote beneath the shade, from reality's chatter she felt free,

She weaved lines about how she wished that she too were a tree.
