The Life of an International Fan
The life of an international fan is interesting to look at.
People ask why we listen to Korean music,
Because it’s not like we understand what they’re saying.
But we ignore them, learning the lyrics,
And maybe picking up a few Korean phrases on the way.
“Like Gangnam Style?” people ask.
“But so much more than that,” is my reply.
The music is one thing, but there are many other factors.
K-pop introduces us to a culture so different from our own,
And we welcome it into our lives.
We spend our time watching their own reality shows
In order to get to know our favorite idols.
We follow Korean dramas
So we can see our idols act.
English subtitles are our best friend
When it comes to interviews and variety show appearances.
We yearn for the day our favorite band comes to our city,
Or even the closest “big city” to us.
New York, LA, and San Fran are popular destinations,
And those of us who live in the Midwest
Patiently (or not) wait for someone to come to Chicago.
We love it when K-pop idols try to connect with us
By speaking English, even when their pronunciation is completely off.
The most rewarding thing about being an international fan
Is when our idols acknowledge us as different from Korean fans.
When they speak of our unconditional support, my heart swells with pride.
So we international fans should band together,
Without fandom wars,
And rise up against those who think we’re silly to listen to Kpop.
Music is an international language,
And we are proof of this.
