Kindling

You believed in love at 16

you didn't learn it was a lie
not for five years
but you suspected it every day
every time you cried in the shower
every time you dreamt of him dead
while driving home from work.

You grew hard until the next one made you soft. Not too soft to leave.
You left and you left and you loved
burning all those bridges.

You believed in love again at 23
you stupid bitch. You say you will not love. You leave and leave,
until you are left.

You know you shouldn't use people
but God, what else do you know?
Use the boy with the pretty eyes,
the girl with the broken heart,
use the couple that uses you for sex
Relish it.

You are used up you are ready
go on and burn
burn like they praise you for
burn like they loved you for
burn them all down.
That way, you know,
you can't be left
by nothing.
No one
is no one to hurt you.
