Insomnia

Location

Blankets of thick starry felt, beginning the ritual,
Canopy over the plains and press down the souls to rest
Secretly the crystalline barrier forms out to encase the One
The One cursed to watch the rest of the world rest
Peacefully under satin and velvety starry unconsciousness

Eyes with wading fluids spilling in and cleaning the barrier
As do the mischievous and playful ghosts
Who scratch and press against One's eyes at night
One's eyes blinking and pressing together
But little ghosts pry them open and stretch them out
And shine black lights inside to bounce and refract

One's mind starts knocking at the sutures of One's skull
Begging to come out to dance and screech with the ghosts
Mind begins to speak and whisper loudly into One's ear
Megaphoning about boiling water and white roses that will never bloom
And rain begins sliding down the crystalline barrier
Rain drops carrying echoes and releasing distilled words
When they burst at the foot of One's bed

And suddenly, the Father comes to lift the blankets off the resting souls
One's crystalline barrier bursts as the ghosts die and Mind retreats
The Father enters the chamber to lift a blanket not present in One's room
Radiant blinding life and vibrant whimsical light come through the door
Drying eyes begin to draw their curtain and megaphoning ears switch off
Against One's chest does One feel the force of Father's question
Does One feel the mockery and pain that is the words
"Why didn't you sleep, Why didn't you sleep, Why didn't you sleep?"

I don't know."
