The Inductive Effect
Carbon molecules in line notation stream
Into my eager ears, and their names form
Straight tree branches that tip and teem
With hydrogens. Substituents adorn
Long chains of carbons that connect and yawn
Arm in arm. Whole worlds between atoms lie,
Unknown knowledge breathing between bonds
Changing, shifting, keeping the high
Secrets of a universe beyond vision.
Inside atoms, whole words live lingering
Hidden from sight. Their movements and rhythms
Define the whole world and keep it stronger.
The carbons, bonds, and branches life clings to
Lie hushed in whole worlds we live through.
