I'm Holding On

I’m holding on to my independence.

It used to be a joke to me

Going to the bathroom in groups of three,

The thought of someone not independently peeing

“That’s sort of gross,” I would mockingly think.

This is isn’t a cute twin day

Or a game where we purposely speak alike

I want my independence, and I’m keeping it, alright?

Now it’s validation through a double-tap

Or ravenous envy from a “raging” Snap

They are they

And you are you

Who cares what they do!

Autonomy does not equate to lonely.

Deserted island, high-school cafeteria

College auditorium, internship office

No matter,

I will keep my independence.

Healing time of solidarity

Peace of mind; break from similarity.

I’m holding on to my independence.
