If something could be different

If something could be different

what would people choose to fix?

Would it be

their hair

their eyes

their skin

or their smile?

Would it be

an action taken back

a word they wish unsaid

or a memory jotted down

so as not to be forgotten?

Would they wish to change themselves?

Would they wish to change a friend?

Would they wish to change a situation?

Or would they wish to change society,

just as I do?

Perhaps their changes would be different from mine.

Instead of mending the scars still being carved by racism

they might bring back a friend who died

because of the way his skin reflected the wrong color of light

Maybe instead of dismantling gender norms

to keep those who feel different from being treated

as though they are an embarrassment

people might wish to get back at the ones who bullied them

because they didn't conform to a certain standard

While I wish to show people that love isn't about what body you were born in

but that it's about the strength of a heart's feelings,

they could be wishing for those that disagree with them

to just disappear.
